Brunswick Hotel

The Brunswick Hotel was badly damaged by fire. Three levels of brick walls remained onsite that were unstable. A crane basket was used to manually hand demolish walls to the first floor to allow safe access.

Asbestos was identified in the building which was rendered friable due to fire. This presented a major challenge to meet WorkSafe and legislative requirements with the site being within the CBD and having public access to all neighbouring buildings during our works. Friable asbestos removal was required to be performed in the Hobart city centre with 1,100 tonnes of material to be removed under asbestos conditions.

Access to the site was via a restrictive laneway within the building facade. A custom-built negative air loading enclosure on Liverpool Street was constructed to allow skip bins to be loaded while ensuring nearby businesses and members of the public were not affected.

Works were successfully completed in a 7-week period without daily air monitoring within the site of all works, with the project completed without public concerns. These were extremely public works with many neighbouring buildings overlooking the removal area.
