Spectran successfully delivered the Coles Bay Second Supply Main Water Main Renewal project as part of the TasWater Capital Delivery Office (CDO) Program, installing approximately 700 metres of DN150 Ductile Iron Cement Lined (DICL) potable water main together with a 16-metre Horizontal Directional Drill (HDD) road crossing.
Working within a busy tourist destination and environmentally sensitive area, the project required careful planning to minimise disruption to residents, visitors and the surrounding natural environment. Construction included open-cut trenching, HDD installation, tie-in connections to the existing network and full reinstatement of all disturbed areas.
To maximise productivity and reduce the construction program, Spectran deployed multiple crews across separate work fronts, allowing pipeline installation and reinstatement to occur simultaneously. The team consistently achieved installation rates of 10–12 pipe lengths per day while maintaining high standards of quality and safety.
A key project achievement was the successful rerouting of the pipeline to preserve two mature 50-year-old trees, using non-destructive digging (NDD) techniques while remaining fully compliant with TasWater and MRWA requirements. Two critical live tie-in connections were also completed within the nominated four-hour shutdown windows, ensuring minimal disruption to water services.
Despite challenging weather conditions, traffic management constraints and the need to manage potential Acid Sulphate Soils, Spectran completed the project safely, meeting all contractual requirements and achieving a 100% pass rate across all compaction and hydrostatic pressure testing.
