MONA Jetty Tunnel

Spectran Group successfully delivered the civil construction and tunnelling works for the Mona Jetty Tunnel, providing a new underground connection between the MONA Jetty and the Museum of Old and New Art. Delivered within a sensitive waterfront environment, the project required specialist engineering, precision excavation, and strict environmental management throughout all stages of construction.

Scope of Works

  • Design and construction of a temporary foreshore works platform using barge access.
  • Development and implementation of project-specific Environmental and Weed Management Plans in accordance with EPA and local council requirements.
  • Bulk excavation, embankment stabilisation, and water diversion works.
  • Precision sandstone excavation and final trimming to engineering tolerances.
  • Supply and operation of specialist tunnelling equipment, including a 24-tonne Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), air handling units, compressors, generators, and associated plant.
  • Design and installation of mine mesh and rock bolt support systems in collaboration with geotechnical and structural engineers.
  • Successful tunnel breakthrough into the existing museum while maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality, and environmental compliance.
