MONA Stone Sea Passage

Spectran Group delivered the civil works for Stone Sea Passage, the internationally acclaimed installation by renowned artist Andy Goldsworthy at the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA). The project involved the extraction, transport, and installation of more than 300 sandstone blocks, requiring specialist lifting solutions, detailed logistics planning, and close collaboration with the artist to realise his vision.

Scope of Works:

  • Development and implementation of a project-specific Construction Management Plan.
  • Extraction, handling, and transport of sandstone blocks from the Colebrook Quarry to the MONA site.
  • Design and testing of specialised lifting methodologies for sandstone blocks weighing between 2 and 6 tonnes.
  • Preparation of the installation area, including construction of a 9 × 53 metre subbase within Berriedale Bay.
  • Design and construction of a certified crane pad to accommodate a 220-tonne crane.
  • Installation of more than 300 sandstone blocks, totalling approximately 700 tonnes, under the direction of artist Andy Goldsworthy.
  • Coordination of transport, crane operations, and material handling within the operational constraints of the MONA site and Moorilla Estate.
